“Like” Messages and Lack of Words

I plan on keeping the last 50 cranes out of the one thousand I will make this vacation. This is a section of those cranes. They are so much alike, all made from the same flyer. Same folds, yet all presented different difficulty, no two folds are same. I like all and I dis-like none. I think that my approach to girls is alike the cranes. I pay close attention to one at a time and never-ever compare them…

Have you ever been asked, if you like someone? Everybody did, people who have to much free time eventually will turn to you for gossip material. It is nothing bad, they care. Most importantly they want to learn from you. They will express their opinion, (dis)approval and pay strict attention to everything your not sharing.

“But do you like … (pause) … really like her? I mean, like, “Like” her?” I have been asked this several time. Every time I make a face of a polar-bear reading Gore’s report on global warming. What do you mean “like”? Isn’t it simple (yes or no)? I always miss something. Bummer! Now that I’m on vacation, with loads of free time, I thought about clarifications.

It seems that everyone (outside the couple) is very scared of the world love, before it is “officially” announced by the involved. Any choice of metaphor hinting at something more than a somewhat “platonic liking” seems to be considered inappropriate. People are nosy. They must know, know all.

There is a different “like” for infatuation, crushes, marriage plans (if (s)he says “Hi”), simple I want to have sex and “true” platonic like. Every culture seems to be approaching it differently, everyone has a comfort level which is directly linked to their openness. Most people I met (US) have a basic need to categorize what they see, liking becomes important.

They all feel constrained by the lack of decent words, they want to see how did you do it. Just maybe your way of approach to the problem is better. It is fissile that, you found a phrase before the “three dates” are up that defines interested beyond what you want people to know. A simple way to say, a delicate way to put it. If you need to categorize you will loose, there is no words.

Rules of Engagement: Compliments (Part III)

This is one of the 883 cranes I did till now. Plan is 1K by the time I walk into the airplane. Lately I have been slacking making made under 50 of them since Friday last week. This picture was taken weeks ago. While I was walking around Warsaw I had a vision of my crane being “hilled” down by a pretty girl, four “No”s later I got what I wanted. I wished she could model for me for a bit.

It is an lost art. That being said let me consider something I have been told (by a student of mine), supposedly works like a charm. “You’re hot! You want to …. (do the squelchy)?” I would ask, that you keep this “complement-like” statement in mind while reading the rest of the posts.

I think that there are several things vital to be consider when approaching the delicate topic of compliments. The simplest being a complete purity of intention. It is crucial to have a very clear understanding why you are giving the compliment. What would you consider a satisfactory reaction? Although most might not agree with your reasons or thinking, you have to be convinced that what your saying, is needed to be said.

You ought to be honest and believe in what you are saying. Lying should not take a place ever. Why would you even bother? I am put in the position where my judgement is being questions and I will get to it last. Bottom line, as long as you’re honest with yourself and believe in what you are saying, the opinions of others about your compliments should never be acknowledged by you.

The following is the one thing everyone should understand about compliments, the quint essence of the art if you like. A compliment is a simple message were all and every part of it is completely visible, yet what is visible is not what should matter. The mastery is to weave the absolute visibility of words within the delicate pattern of the subtext.

If you like talking to somebody what would be a subtle way you would let them know that? There is the body language and the way you speak. It is important how you mix the message in between lines of text that carries all the “juice”. Saying “I like talking to you…” sounds like an excuse for inability in communicating. I give people compliments when I like interacting with them.

Unfortunately, I get questioned. A blush became a rare reaction, now everyone is looking for what is not there, because it is impossible to just be nice. I like talking to you, I compliment, the rest of the office thinks that we are sleeping together. Cool, but so untrue. I stopped correcting people, makes it easy to strain the simpleminded ones.

Maybe to avoid that simple (barbaric) conclusions, I should use compliments like the one above. Intentions are clear, probably honest (desperate?) and I could weave in the fact that I will provide breakfast and couple bucks for the taxi… I feel sad for people that do not try to understand the art.

Best Legal Money Scams: Politics (Part III)

So there is something I do not remember seeing in US, public, payed and very clean bathrooms. Entry at about 75 cents (after conversion). When I was planing for this entry it seemed as an appropriate picture as the urinals are clean and not separated. One enters with a dignifies respect for other users to be decent. With everything very clean, available all over town. You got to pee…

I have to be honest. Lately I felt as if I had my emotional and psychological health smashed by a blunt “white” weapon. That was the reason for uploading all the topics a while back. I did not want to upload to many entries at a time for that same reason. I’m trying to be objective in my writing, but by the simple merit of this being my thoughts poured on paper, so to speak, it will never be without a bit of Jan.

By no means it is not a bad thing and I think that what makes what I write interesting for you to read. It is the fact that you are reading me (my thoughts, my conclusions, my life) with the angel-sweet sugar coating on top and hell-fire burned bottom, that is honest. It was created as the name suggests as my version, with the blog initially begin the latest version of what and how I see things.

That said, I would like to believe that I am doing you a dis-service if I was going to give you an entry about something that has not yet matured in my head. There were several pieces written, over the past seven weeks or so, that were emotional in nature. Written under an impulse and with a clear feeling of purpose. Those pieces, however where written because the principles that have been harmed were, in my humble opinion, matured enough.

Thus we arrive at our entry for today. I have written this piece several times (each time following this vague constraint of space and feeling) just as I written the two other pieces from this series. There is the following problem though, I do not feel as strongly convinced that what I’m writing I’m willing to “burn in hell” for as the religion one is, nor I want to force a radical change as if in the case of the university food one.

Today I feel as if my objectivity is again being supported by my mental strength, strength which lately has been stretched thin. I do not think I am yet back to my normal self, but I can say, once again “I’m peachy” without feeling as if I am lying. I will think the politics issue over and attempt a re-post, the moment I am willing to, also, run for office to change that what I am so offended by.

Best Legal Money Scams: Universities (Part II)

Central Warsaw, the old section, next to the royal castle. This is the front the gate to the main complex. I has a academic feeling to it, as does the rest of the institution, comparing to Stony Brook University which missed the presentation. There is plenty space and trees, plenty columns and golden ornaments. It feels real and demands respect and curiosity… refreshing at last.

Hi my name is Jan and I have been ripped off by my university. Among all the issues I have with the “great” American education system, universities raise the most troublesome questions. To clarify, I have attended Stony Brook University among with tenths thousands of other students. However, the issue I will talk about is as much prominent in most universities, colleges and institutions of higher learning as in SBU on LI in NY.

In theory you need only a limited number of things, conditions to function in college. A bed to sleep in, a desk to do homework on, access to books and a computer with internet, bathroom and food. The two schools I can vouch for are Stony Brook University and Westminster Choir College. Although I have eaten in several other schools in NY, NJ are those two I have frequent the most.

Those two schools (as do many more) have a “ironclad” requirement for freshmen’s (or longer) which is a meal-plans. You pay the university a large lump of money they give you points, that you can use to pay for food sold on campus. Idea, I guess, is not to starve, one is almost eighteen though (first year), so how could you not take care of yourself? Haven’t you learned by now?

Couple very simple catches show up. One, after finals are over for that semester unused points are lost. Two, food on campus is at least 40% more expensive on campus than the closest grocery store. The selection of “affordably” over-priced “healthier” food is very limited. Three, cooking on campus is very much hindered. Four, there is no way to fight it or appeal it. Five the campus specially orders decent food for the upper staff and alumni that come to campus.

So how do you fight a monopoly on food? Monopoly which in the best case will make you spend couple afternoons in the bathroom sitting and in worse you will be there on your knees hugging the ceramics or at the doctors with food poisoning. Monopoly which forces you to gain weight or spend a second tuition on outside food. Monopoly in which beer (five minutes off campus) is half as expensive as water on campus. Monopoly which does not care, because there is nothing you can do.

I heard explanations “So what are you going to do? Leave? Go right ahead (we don’t need you)”. Am I not the one paying for the tuition? Isn’t it unreasonable to expect some level of service? Unless the dissatisfaction with the foods safety and outrages prices gets a national momentum nothing will change, there is still more people willing to enlist and suffer through breakfast, lunch and lack of dinner (too expensive). In US higher education is a business and it is run as one, with a small difference. The inspections are internal and sanctioned by the money-greedy.
